Yale Peabody

Behind-the-Scenes Collection Tours

First and Third Tuesdays, February through May

From Anthropology to Zoology, the 13 million objects and specimens in the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History’s collections represent a world-class record of the history of Earth and its cultures. Yet less than a tenth of one percent is on display in the public galleries! In continuing celebration of our 150th anniversary, we’re offering free behind-the-scenes tours on the first and third Tuesdays of every month this spring. In this tour led by Yale students you’ll visit two different curatorial divisions, learn how the collections are stored and organized, and glimpse some hidden treasures that rarely see the light of day.

Tours are by registration only, and will be limited to a total of 24 people. Please limit the number in your party to 4, and please only register for one tour date in order to allow space for others to attend. Because many of the collections storage rooms are active labs or workspaces with fragile objects in some cases, these tours are not open to children under 12. Tours leave from the Peabody Museum lobby promptly at 4:00 pm.

To register, please click on the link for the appropriate date below. This will take you off our website to SignUpGenius, where you’ll simply enter your name, e-mail address, and number in your party. If the Tour Attendees slots are full, please do sign up for the waitlist and we will contact you if space becomes available.

Yale Peabody Museum Gallery Talks

First and Third Thursdays, January through May

Join us this winter and spring on the first and third Thursday afternoons of the month for a special series of gallery talks! Yale Peabody Museum collections managers and graduate students will feature one or two remarkable objects from our collections in a 20-minute presentation, followed by Q&A. As we continue to celebrate our 150th anniversary, find out how these objects fit into the long history of the Peabody Museum as a source of knowledge and understanding about the Earth and its cultures, and why our resident experts are so excited to talk about them! Refreshments will be served; ask at the front desk for specific location.
